Montclair Fixit Collective Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
This FAQ is a living document and will be updated to reflect the state of the Montclair Fixit Collective as the experiment evolves.
Who are you?
The Montclair Fixit Collective has been created by Jon Bonesteel and HackNCraftNJ's supporting members. We hope to get others to join us very soon and if you are interested in joining the crew, please contact Jon. He'd love to chat and get you online as a part of the Fixit team. Please note that since the Montclair Fixit Collective is a nonprofit, we are only looking for volunteers. We can't pay you to fix things.
Nonprofit, Really?
Yes. Technically, the Makerspace (HackNCraftNJ, Inc.) is the nonprofit here. They (we) are a federally recognized 501c3 organization and we are support our nonprofit mission.
Speaking of profit, what do repairs cost?
We do not have a schedule of fees for repairs, but we would hope that if our collective helps you repair your item(s), you would consider a donation to the nonprofit to support our expenses. Note that you would be expected to pay for parts that may be required to fix your item(s). That's only fair, right?
What if you can't fix my item(s)?
We will do our best to repair your things or find someone who can. If we can't we will refer you to local merchants or service providers who can repair the item(s) for a fee.
What items do you repair and what don't you repair?
We are just starting up, but we hope to be able to repair: chairs, lamps, jewelry, appliances, toys, clothes, curios, tools, frames, glasses, some basic bicycle repairs, some basic auto fixes (e.g. replacing wipers, fixing fuses, etc.).
We do NOT repair: shoes, mobile phone (iPhone or Android) or iPad screens, software problems, very fine jewelry, clothing mends that require a fitting (alterations).
All this said, we're open to your challenges - Bring it on! We'll let you know if it's possible.
